Hippolytus By Euripides First presented in 428 BC I have reread this tragedy shortly after I had read the play of ‘Phaedra’ by Racine. Euripides work is an extremely beautiful reading pleasure and provides a very colorfully painted picture of events. Especially the chorus and coryphe give the reader a feeling of participation. A reading and discussion of Euripides' Hippolytus (translation by Ian Johnston), hosted by Joel Christensen (Brandeis University) with special guest Eirene V Hippolytus is a mortal prince who prefers chastity and hunting to the pursuits under Aphrodite’s purview. He therefore worships Artemis, goddess of the hunt and virginity, to the exclusion of Aphrodite, goddess of love. Furious at this slight, Aphrodite avenges her honor by causing Hippolytus’ stepmother, Phaedra, to fall in love with him.

Phaedra’s every action is a struggle against Hippolytus’ strong morals and chastity. The story is one of a fight between the two characters, concluding with Hippolytus’ loss of life, an event that leads to Phaedra’s shame and eventually her death.

The last scene of thePhaedrahas a peculiarly complex form of literariness and textuality, for Seneca here “contaminates” Euripides’Hippolytuswith theBacchae. He suppresses the reconciliation between father and son that closes the extant Hippolytus and instead develops his own version of the aged, enfeebled father-figure, Cadmus, who
